Why did they only win 85 games? The simple reason is the Cubs hitters were terrible at getting on base. The top 5 teams in OBP last year were the Yankees, Red Sox, Rockies, Phillies and Angels -- five teams which all made the playoffs and include the World Series champion and both pennant winners.

Enter Kosuke Fukudome. Enter Reed Johnson. Enter Geovany Soto. Including those three guys, as well as holdovers Mark DeRosa, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Ryan Theriot (and even Ronny Cedeno in limited duty), the Cubs have EIGHT guys getting on base more than 40 percent of the time. That's fantastic!

In fact, the Cubs are tops in the NL in OBP and are only second to the Red Sox overall. (Think the DH factors into that just a tad?) What a difference a year makes and the Cubs are making that .364 team OBP count because they are slugging .454, good enough for fifth overall.

The pitching hasn't been quite as good as last year, but they have much more room for error this season than last. The bullpen is ahead of the starting rotation at this point and Carlos Marmol has simply been outstanding, but I have faith that guys like Ted Lilly and Rich Hill will turn it around -- especially Hill, whose curveball is among the best in the league.

That being said, it should be a fun year to watch the North siders. Old Style anyone?

Again, in a word.... ugh.

"We're thinking about the World Series," he said. "I think we'll be OK if we keep playing like that."

Ronny, ask Zambrano about making predictions, ask Sports Illustrated (are they EVER right?)

The Cubs are playing great baseball. They are 13-6 and have scored more than 30 more runs than their opponents, but let's not get too crazy yet. I mean, the Cubs are 6-0 against the Pirates and 7-6 against everyone else. The bats are alive and Big Z is playing great, but let's temper those expectations for a few months.

I want a confident Derrek Lee saying that in late August, not bench player Ronny Cedeno after one clutch hit in mid-April.

I am a fan of all sports, but MLB.com gives me more reason to invest time in its Web site than any other sport in the world. I use MLB.tv, play fantasy baseball and sample games like Beat the Streak from time to time. The MLB reporters, while not as tough on teams as independent sports reporters, still ask a lot harder questions than their counterparts in other leagues and have a lot more access to the players and coaches.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, GOOD JOB baseball! MLB has really hit the mark when it comes to providing online content and is getting better year in and year out, making the sport more accessible and fun to follow.

Now let's get to the good stuff. Here are the sites I enjoy the most around the Internet:

• UmpBump.com - perhaps my favorite baseball Web site, the writers combine a great knowlege of the game with acerbic wit to make their readings both insightful and comical. They weave in important news stories like Frank Thomas being released with, as Mike & Mike of ESPN would say, news of the weird, commenting on things like Eric Byrnes' freaky streaky 'stace straight out of a 1970s high school yearbook. They also tell it like it is. They aren't reporters getting chummy with players in the locker room. They are fans like the rest of us who tell it like we want to hear it. (Plus the Jamie Kotsay post was an automatic classic and a great Google Easter Egg to this day.)

• HardballTimes.com - this site is in dire need of a facelift, but for pure number crunching and analysis of the player and teams we love (or love to hate) there isn't a better Web site on the World Wide Web. It has such informative posts I wouldn't be surprised to catch sabermetrics wizard Bill James reading it from time to time when he's feeling lazy at Fenway. Not only do the guys at Hardball Times offer unabashed opinions, they back those opinions up with mountains of statistics and analysis. Like I said before, if you get over how it's a bit hard to navigate, this is truly one of the best baseball sites on the planet.

• Alyssa Milano's "*touch* 'em all" blog - Wow, who saw this coming? This is why I love MLB. They just made it a million times easier for me to find great baseball blogs (and even create my own). Alyssa Milano is a Dodger fan (which we will forgive her for), but this Hollywood star knows her stuff between the lines. I haven't been a longtime reader of her site having just found it over the past couple of weeks, but I find myself checking back with increased regularity... for more than just pictures of Alyssa Milano. In her last post alone, she touched on the issue of fewer and fewer black kids playing baseball, voiced her frustration at the Dodgers' lackluster start, (Andruw Jones anyone?), and pledged her undying loyalty to Joe Torre. I loved it.

Other than Fukudome, who has been among the best players in all of baseball so far this season, my favorite player to watch so far is easily Geovany Soto. Soto went 4-for-5 on Thursday night with a go-ahead 2-run homerun and a triple away from the cycle. That coming after playing every inning off Monday's 12-inning affair and Wednesday's 15-inning contest.

Len Kasper called it correctly in the first week of the season. Soto wasn't getting hits but man was he scorching the baseball. I can't wait until the winds shift inside the Friendly Confines and this kid with a name straight out of a Charles Dickens novel starts raking like he's Johnny Lee Bench.

Note: Does anyone else hate seeing Corey Patterson playing so well for Cincy this year? I mean I was really looking forward to him roaming centerfield in Wrigley Field for Dusty Baker this year and actually being happy when he went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts on a total of 12 pitches.

I feel slighted. Pie is doing his best Corey Patterson impersonation and now Patterson is finally acting like the 5-tool player we were always told he was. Note to self, if Eric Patterson sucks his first year, don't trade him for a Hairston. Let him ride it out in Iowa until he comes along.

Well, I have predicted the World Series winner correctly two out of the last three years, but it's not looking good so far this year. The Tigers finally won a game last night against Boston, but it's not a good sign when your World Series pick starts the year 0-7. It's been painful to watch Miguel Cabrera at the plate (especially since I own him in fantasy), but the Detroit bullpen has been even worse.

Brandon Inge is off to about the hottest start of any Tiger. If I'm the Tigers, I'm looking to trade him now while his value is high and get a good setup man in return. They missed out on one of the Cubs' good bullpen arms when the Cubs signed Reed Johnson. A win-win for both teams would be sending him to the Indians where 3B Casey Blake isn't exactly raking at the plate this year (or any year), but that won't happen since it would be between two division teams.

Baltimore could be a good fit. The O's could use another good young versatile outfielder and have plenty of options for the Tigers... Sarfate, Sherrill and Albers, the best of whom is Dennis Sarfate. He already has two wins this year and hasn't given up a run.

The Tigers biggest problem is just getting to October. I think they'll be fine if they get there because the use of the bullpens will shrink and they can ride Justin Verlander. Getting there though will be tough. Their division is the best in baseball, and the Indians have been picked by many to win it all. (But they won't because Sports Illustrated picked them. I still blame the Cubs' terrible 2004 on them.) The White Sox, Twins and wow, even the Royals are also competitive this year.

If they hope to contend, they need to make a move now. Trade Inge for some help in the 'pen... or ride it out as the blown saves and blown holds mount up.

Here are my preseason MLB picks that I'm reposting on my new blog:

NL East - Mets
NL Central - Cubs
NL West - Diamondbacks
NL WC - Phillies

AL East - Red Sox
AL Central - Indians
AL West - Angels
AL WC - Tigers

World Series - Tigers over Cubs

NL MVP - Hanley Ramirez
AL MVP - Miguel Cabrera

NL Cy Young - Jake Peavy
AL Cy Young - C.C. Sabathia

NL Rookie of Year - Kosuke Fukudome (Cueto best non-Japanese player)
AL Rookie of Year - Clay Buchholz

If I had to pick three teams to win it all, I'd pick:

1. Tigers
2. Indians
3. Diamondbacks

Teams that will do better than expected:

AL Sleeper - Rays (3rd in AL East)
NL Sleeper - Dodgers (2nd in NL West)
